Aren’t we all asking the same fundamental questions in life: is this real life? Why is this happening to me? Is this gonna be forever? And how many fingers do you really have? Check out our young hero David, just coming back from the dentist, still enjoying the novocaine, asking all of them. For your pleasure, WiFone made an acid remix of it all.

SSH-ing into your device all of the time, and annoyed by having to enter your password each time? Easy fix. You just need to set up public key authentification. Here’s how to do so, step by step.

Moyashi recently made a really cool SBSettings plugin to post to Twitter, called ‘Fast Twitter‘ (based on his earlier SBSettings plug ‘Fast Notes’). Here’s how to install it (at least until it appears on Cydia) and set it up (as Japanese instructions are hard to read for most of us).

Link Identity Editor (ldid) by Jay Freeman (saurik) can be used to bypass codesigning on the iPhoneOS (see his post ’Bypassing iPhone Code Signature‘). He also made a version for OS X, which is very handy if you build your iPhoneOS stuff on OS X. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to install it.

I have just installed the ‘Open Toolchain’ for iPhoneOS 2.x on Ubuntu Studio, using the recently revised script by Jay Freeman (saurik). In fact it was more than recent. During the install, Jay helped me out with some errors I ran into, and made some further refinements to the script. We managed to get his script to install a working toolchain without much effort. Thus, this script should now be an even easier way to set up the toolchain. Almost a one-click install, really.

So you grabbed the amazing TV out plug by Lance Fetters (aka ashikase) (also see this post) … or perhaps you stopped just short of that, because you figured you would also need a Apple Composite or Component AV Cable, but don’t have one yet. These cables are notoriously expensive ($49 in the US, and even €49 in Euro countries - doesn’t anyone check currency exchange rates at Apple, or are they just charging even more excessive prices in the EU deliberately?), but even if you’re willing to shell out that amount of cash for just a freaking cable (the TV-out plugin definitely makes it more worthwhile than before), they’re also notoriously hard to find on the Apple Store. Following links from iPhone Accessories may very well lead your search to a dead end. For your convenience, here are the links, and a slightly cheaper alternative as well.

I just tested the forthcoming TV output support by Lance Fetters (ashikase) a bit, and it’s awesome. One of the apps that I tried made me so LMAO that I had to show it: Teletekst.(*)

Here’s an easy to overlook little gem of a MobileSubstrate plugin by Stimpy5050, for a ‘reflective dock’ on the iPhone, based on the earlier HTML/JavaScript hack by Sakurina (see Sakurina’s iPhone Hacks). It’s not available on Cydia, so you’ll have to find, download and install it yourself. I hadn’t seen it until Sakurina pointed me to it…

Now here’s a nice hack Lance Fetters (ashikase) has been working on for some time now. The (perhaps somewhat useless but imho really cool) point is to make the icons on the SpringBoard rotate according to the device’s orientation. On an earlier version, he managed to hook into the SpringBoard to make the icons rotate smoothly by 90 degrees about every second. The slightly trickier part was to get an extension of SpringBoard to receive the accelerometer data. This basic concept seems to be working now, albeit a little sluggish; on initial testing it only worked for firmware 2.2 (on 2.1 it craps out after a few seconds; SpringBoard seems to kill the accelerometer), where it also gets killed on quitting apps. This definitely still needs some work. But that’s no reason not to show some previews, right?

Yay! From now on (well after the soon to be expected public release of version 0.9.2694-1 anyway) we can use per-page wallpaper images in WinterBoard. The per-page wallpapers should be named Page#.png, with # being numbers 1 through 9. They are placed over the ‘default’ wallpaper and any widgets, but behind the dock.

Jay Freeman (saurik) has made some very handy binaries containing the approprite header files for the ‘open’ toolchain for iPhoneOS. These header files complement the GNU Complier Collection (GCC) and the GNU Debugger (GDB) to provide for a complete functioning toolchain right on your device. Here’s how to easily install the whole thing in just a few minutes.
