2.2.1 SDK and Firmware Released

New iPhoneOS firmware 2.2.1 is out, and also a new SDK version 2.2.1.

Update: in contrast with version 2.2 of the SDK, version 2.2.1 does not require OS X 10.5.5 as a minimum, but also installs on OS X 10.5.4.

General advice: as usual, hold off for now, at least on the firmware, since there is no jailbreak yet. As for the SDK: unless you have a really good reason not to, you should compile apps for 2.0 to aim for the broadest possible compatibility anyway.

The firmware is supposed to fix some bugs in Mobile Safari, and in saving pictures from email in Mail.app to the Camera Roll.

Most interesting is perhaps that the SDK brings the new (optional) LLVM GCC 4.2 and GCC 4.2 compilers, (according to the readme - ADC login required):

What’s New:

  • SDK support for targeting non-Mac OS X platforms, including iPhone OS SDK.
  • GCC 4.2 & LLVM GCC 4.2 optional compilers for use with Mac OS X 10.5 SDK
  • Updated assistants to create new projects, targets, and source files
  • Toolbar uses a single popup to choose platform, target, and debug/release
  • Integrated SCM support now works with Subversion 1.5

Also, there is no mention of OS X 10.5.5 specifically:

Compatibility with Mac OS X Versions

iPhone SDK requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X Leopard version 10.5.4 or later. Xcode 3.1.2 is also available separately for Mac-only development and is compatible with Intel and PowerPC Macs running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 and later.

This may mean that people using a hackint0sh to run the SDK and are having problems with updating from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5 (or just don’t want to for some reason) can now install the 2.2.1 SDK (whereas 2.2 required OS X 10.5.5 to be installed as a minimum).

Update: confirmed: the 2.2.1 SDK installs on OS X 10.5.4 just fine. How nice of Apple to think of all those OSX86′ers who are afraid to update on first notice (PsyStar anyone?). :-)
